Banff, you may have noticed, is in the mountains, and that means more than just rugged backdrops.

To be honest, there are dozens of peaks in the Rocky Mountains with great views, but not all have a town below.

It doesn’t hurt that Sulphur Mountain has views up and down valleys as well, which gives people a chance to see a view usually reserved for helicopter tours.

It’s actually at a bit of a junction, when it comes to valleys, and long ranges of mountains line up, disappearing into the distance.

However, the highlight, to me, is Banff, a tiny town down below with the massive Cascade Mountain sitting in the background. The tiny Tunnel Mountain sits next to the town, like a little brother to the larger mountains in the area.

That’s just my pick, though. Others like the forest valley, dense and green, or the seemingly never ending sea of mountain peaks spreading out in the distance.

A short drive from the town (or a bit of a walk), the beginning of the gondola is just past the town. It takes you up to the top of the mountain, or you can hike. There is a bit of a walk to the best view points.

The trip up the gondola is really the way to go unless you’re an avid hiker with plenty of time (it’s a steep climb…I think, I’ve never done it since you’re goin’ up a mountain). However, it’s not cheap, running about $60 (it depends on the day). And then there’s additional costs at the top, like at the gift shop or restaurant (of course). In other words, plan for ti to be an expensive day.

Number 10 on the list of things to do in Banff National Park by TripAdvisor, not everyone believes in the value. The official site is important in this case, since it’ll give you up-to-date pricing and you can call ahead (in case there’s a private event taking over sections — yes, you can have a wedding up there). The town’s profile of the mountain touches on the trail, while Banff and Beyond talks about how to get the most out of your visit, while also showing off a ton of photos.
